A courier brought the information from the seashore: The Sainte Hélène, a four-masted galleon carrying 65 cannons and displacing 600 tons, was back from the New World with her holds full.
Dirty and out of breath, the courier coughed to draw the attention of the nobles, already cheering as loudly as the day the ship left 18 months ago.

Ordered to deliver his news, the courier gasped that pirates had attacked the galleon. Some goods were lost. Some crewmen were killed.

A few days later, Lady Rocateau dressed in the summer heat, her headdress representing the Sainte Hélène to welcome the crew and her betrothed.
Happy, but anxious: had the man she planned to marry returned safely?
The sound of wheels on gravel announced the coach's arrival, then footsteps and greetings... Lady Rocateau froze, stopping in the middle of the draught-board hall and becoming the queen of an unknown game. She can't stand waiting to know her destiny, but she also fears to be checkmated… is he back?
Her heartbeat pounded in her tightened breast, is her beloved there?

Time hung...
